The Finalists - Men
# 1 Travis Craig 14 shots, 61’ 7”
Ireland,
County Lewis, WV
Travis Craig is one of the founders of Irish road bowling in West Virginia, playing in the first ever match with Don’s (Stewart) Daredevils. Later his team became the Ireland Road Bowlers (with Jerod Putnam, Shawn Stewart, Brian Craig, Shannon Gear and Chad Westfall) and they have won almost every match they have played over the past 11 years. Against ever greater competition, the Ireland Road Bowlers still win; on March 18 at the Irish Spring Festival they once again broke their own Wildcat Road 2.2 mile course record, scoring an “easy 30” on Brian Craig’s long homestretch bowl. Travis competed in the North American championships, beating the New York bowlers and leading over Champion Brendan Fleming of Boston after ½ mile before a “leprechaun in the corner” ended his dream of the “All Ireland” finals.
Travis threw the low qualifier 14 shots on the Turkey Run Road at the Strawberry Festival in May.
# 2 Justin Shaffer 16 shots, 114’ 2”
Horse Shoe Run,
County Preston, WV
I'm Justin Shaffer and I go to Tucker County High School. I am 16 years old, and I play football. My hobbies are hunting and fishing but lately it’s been Irish road bowling. Our team name is QUAD S. My team mates are: Guy Wayne Shaffer, Gary Shaffer, and Kenny Schmidt. I wouldn’t be as good without them because they keep me inline. They also keep me cool and calm when I am bowling bad.
# 3 Josh Burnside 16 shots, 30’ 7“
Buckhannon,
County Upshur, WV
A relative newcomer to Irish road bowling, Josh is a top local lanes bowler and has transferred his bowling skills from an indoor wooden lane to a real lane, an outdoor asphalt one. Josh uses his indoor bowling skills to “keep it in the road” and is moving up fast among local Irish road bowlers.
#4 Ken McClintic 17 shots, 196’
Holly River State Park
County Webster, WV
Ken McClintic is employed by the WV Division of Natural Resources as Superintendent of Holly River State Park. His very fine Irish road bowling team, The Holly River Boys, consists of
park employees Donnie Oates, Sonny Arbogast, Blaise Arbogast and Ken. A WVU grad and huge Mountaineer fan, Ken’s son Travis is a member of the Mountaineer football team, and daughter Elise is a member of the WV Wesleyan women's basketball team.
#5 Adam Burnside 17 shots, 51’ 7”
Buckhannon
County Upshur, WV
From Adam Burnside, “I'm a 2006 Graduate of Marshall University. I live in Huntington with my
wife Jessica and work in Charleston as a Registered Nurse. My older brother
Josh Burnside got me interested in Irish road bowling, and I look forward to continuing in
the sport.”
#6 Carl George 17 shots 27’ 6”
Turkey Run Road
County Upshur, WV
Carl and Lisa George live on Turkey Run Road, the Strawberry Festival road bowling course near Buckhannon. Carl and Lisa say “Everyone would enjoy Road Bowling. It fits into any life style, and is a great activity for the entire family to enjoy together.”
# 7 Jerod Putnam 17 shots 19’ 10”
Ireland,
County Lewis, WV
Jerod Putnam, one of the founders of Irish road bowling in West Virginia, played in the first ever match with Don’s (Stewart) Daredevils. Later his team became the Ireland Road Bowlers (with Travis Craig, Shawn Stewart, Brian Craig, Shannon Gear and Chad Westfall) winning almost every match they have played over the past 11 years. Against ever greater competition, the Ireland Road Bowlers still win; on March 18 at the Irish Spring Festival they once again broke their own Wildcat Road 2.2 mile course record, scoring an “easy 30” on Brian Craig’s long homestretch bowl.
Jerod competed in Boston in the North American Region championships, beating New York bowlers, leading John Finn of Boston after ½ mile when the same “leprechaun in the corner” that got Travis caused Jerod to “dead bowl” and just miss qualifying for the All Ireland finals.
#8 Jeff Hamman 17 shots, 17’ 11”
Buckhannon
County Upshur, WV
Jeff has been an enthusiastic Irish road bowler for several years, makes weekend trips with his Buckhannon Road Masters team to many matches in the north central West Virginia area, and from a beginner has learned to become one of the best. Jeff has the skills and plenty of experience to do well in this new/old sport.
A Women’s Competition will be held. Details to be announced.
